NEED YOUR HELP

Tan Jee Say

JSW has written to us something he heard from a friend’s friend:

I heard that Tan Jee Say was being asked to leave AIB-Govett. Is it true? If so, what were the reasons?

Some folk claiming to be “FROM WP MEMBERS” have written:

BEFORE GE2011, TAN JEE SAY TRIED TO JOIN THE WORKERS’ PARTY OF SINGAPORE.
HE ASKED LOW THIA KHIANG TO KICK YEE JENN JONG OUT OF JOO CHIAT, WHEN YEE HAD BEEN IN JOO CHIAT ALL HIS LIFE AND HAD BEEN WORKING THE GROUND FOR 4 YEARS. LOW THIA KHIANG NATURALLY SAID NO. TAN JEE SAY GOT SO ANGRY HE ASKED THAT CHEN SHOW MAO BE KICKED ASIDE SO HE COULD CONTEST IN ALJUNIED. LOW SAID NO. TAN JEE SAY BURST INTO EXTREME ANGER AND SHOUTED “IF YOU DON’T PUT ME IN TO CONTEST IN WP, I WILL CALL CEC TO VOTE YOU OUT OF THE PARTY.”
LOW WAS UNHAPPY AND THE PARTY VOTED TAN JEE SAY OUT.
TAN JEE SAY’S ACTIONS SHOWED HE WAS ARROGANT AND CHALLENGING AUTHORITY.

Workers' Party logo

LOOK WHAT HAPPENED IN THE END.
WORKERS’ PARTY WON!
SINGAPORE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LOST IN HOLLAND BUKIT-TIMAH.
AND HE DIDN’T EVEN THANK RESIDENTS AFTER THE GE SOME MORE! HOW CAN? TAN JEE SAY IS AN UNGRATEFUL MAN.

It seems like Tan Jee Say has a few enemies out there, some of who have a problem with their caps lock key.

Can any of Jee Say’s friends and allies come forward to help confirm or refute these claims? We will publish the replies on this same webpage, to facilitate rebuttal.

Update (August 24, 2011): Tan Jee Say responded to many of these points at his rally last night. Straits Times even gave a full story covering Jee Say’s rally. We reproduce an extract of the Straits Times article below:

STRAITS TIMES (August 24th, 2011)
In defence of financial sector track record
By Tessa Wong

MR TAN Jee Say has defended his track record in the financial sector, declaring that he had ‘achieved every milestone wherever I went’.

He was asked by rally emcee and ex-radio deejay Petrina Kow about his employment record, in a 30-minute interview on stage in the last segment of his rally at Toa Payoh stadium last night.

Reading from a prepared text, Mr Tan acknowledged that there had been queries over his job-hopping. But he argued that it was ‘not uncommon’ for people in the financial sector to move around quickly. His minimum stay at any employer was two years and the maximum was five, which he called ‘not too bad a record’.

Mr Tan worked in a string of investment fund management firms and a bank after he left the Administrative Service in 1990. He became an independent investment adviser in 2006.

At his first stop, investment firm Morgan Grenfell, he said he won the company a SingTel privatisation deal.

He then joined Peregrine Capital in 1994, where he helped the company with its first-ever cross-border merger and acquisition between an Indonesian conglomerate and a major Malaysian mining company. He said it was worth about US$150 million (S$181 million) and witnessed by then Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Mr Tan quit Peregrine in 1997 to join AIB Govett, where he won a ‘major mandate’ from a sovereign wealth fund and set up an Islam-compliant, or syariah fund, for an insurance subsidiary of a major Malaysian bank.

After AIB Govett, he worked for Standard Chartered, Beijing-based investment firm Higreen, and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He did not mention his achievements for those employers last night.

‘There have been a lot of queries online plus the media about my employment record. Let me just set the record straight. I achieved every milestone wherever I went,’ he said.

The interview – clearly meant to give him a chance to expand on some pet topics – also covered his personal life and various political positions.

For example, he was asked about Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s remarks this week that Singapore is too small for political gridlock. Disagreeing, Mr Tan said Parliament created an elected presidency because it saw the need for checks and balances against the Government.

‘So they expect some inefficiency, some slowing down. But this is not bad. This is for the greater democratisation of Singapore… I think we don’t mind a little bit of inefficiency, disagreement, it’s good for the long-term interest of Singapore,’ he said.

Ms Kow also asked him if he would run for president if there was no salary attached. Mr Tan said he would donate the bulk of the president’s salary to charity. He identified two pet causes: helping the elderly, especially those with dementia, and their caregivers, and encouraging youth volunteerism.

He also shared memories of his late mother and the support he is getting now for his campaign from his children and wife, calling her ‘the love of my life’.

  1. Glory to Thia Khiang says:

Ya is true. Jee Say try to kick Jen Jong out of Joochiat. Horrible la he.

  2. Hougang resident says:

Yes! TJS tried to join WP and oust LTK and YJJ and CSM. True! Cannot refute this fact. I witnessed it!

  3. Workers United says:

    I oso saw tat too!

  4. OldSingaporean says:

I am a sceptic. It would appear that TJS was never a WP member. How could he dictate terms as the writer would want us to believe? The situation painted seemed rather extreme. I am always suspicious about arguments that emplore extremes. Also the extreme scenario makes TJS looks rather stupid. Surely he could not be that politically naive?

  5. A says:

The publicly reported version of why Tan Jee Say didn’t run in Aljunied was that TJS didn’t want to run in Aljunied in the first place. TJS didn’t want to run against George Yeo.

TJS came pretty late in the GE game. He wasn’t even in WP long enough that he could get LTK voted out.

It’s up to the reader to get all the facts and make their conclusions really.

  6. Party My Working Men says:

@A off coss TJS din wan to run against George Yeo. He wanted to run against Charles Chong. tat’s the fact! n wp supporters can vouch for you, hearts crossed. it happened. dun try to deny la.

  7. ask says:

I think it might be a good idea to ask one of the reporters to ask him in one of those walkabout interviews.

  8. apparently says:

I can’t personally confirm or deny per se. But a close friend (who is in the inner circles of WP) suggested that TJS approached WP in the lead up to the 2011 May GE to offer himself as a candidate. However, WP CEC apparently wasn’t that keen. They were particularly concerned with his lack of grassroots/community work which is an unofficial requirement to stand as a WP candidate for GE. They were also not willing to guarantee his candidacy in a ‘high value’ GRC/SMC, which is ultimately what led to him walking away. Don’t think he was ever a formal member of WP though, just had ‘talks’ with them before the May GE.

  9. Duty of the WP says:

Jee Say says he wants to challenge the govt. Isn’t that our Workers’ Party’s job? Since when did this guy who can’t even pronounce terrorism think he is higher than our great Low Thia Khiang? Arrogant bastard!

  10. sfsf says:

So may PAPA Internet brigade replying…

  11. Ixnay says:

The timing of this article is impeccable….

  12. GET READY FOR LAWSUIT says:

WHAT kind of Story is this. Friend of friend of friend say this, say that Blah Blah Blah, another LOUSY RUMOUR TO MAKE TJS Look BAD.

FELLOW SINGAPOREANS PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS STORY AND LET IT DIE HERE. THE MORE U SHARE, the MORE PPL WILL COMMENT and THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE. PLEASE IGNORE.

WHY ARE WE NOT SURPRISED THAT this topic is set up by some YPAP Member.? :)

    Editor says:
Tan Jee Say has very thoroughly commented on these matters in his rally and the subsequent chat-show format Q&A with Ms Petrina Kow.

We have reproduced the coverage of his responses, which go into some detail.

If you wish to engage in legal action, please inform us. We do not have a large defense fund and are unable to fight mass defamation lawsuits.

  13. Idiots You All says:

Obviously TJS sore loser brigade comes in to butt our WP men. Horrible! Its insulting to say we are YPAP member. You sore losers can’t get over losing the whole GE and you come blame us. SORE LOSERS!

  14. Never Explain says:

Still TJS never explain the WP saga. Pussyfooting and running away. That is the true face of a coward.

  15. Hea says:

It’s not the first time I’m hearing this. I think what melvin tan from wp said is true. Tan jee say is indeed an arrogant guy!

  16. Hea says:

I just saw goh meng seng’s post on a forum.

Tan Kin Lian was asked a question and answered it, with true honesty.

I do know more about this event because both TJS and TKL are my friends. TKL has stood up on both my rally stage as well as TJS SDP rally stage to lend his support during GE2011. Naturally, in true spirit of Asian Values which I believe all of us hold so dearly, I will help him out as and when it is necessary.

When TJS told me he may go and get the forms for PE, I have a bit of reservations and I told him this will affect TKL’s campaign if both of them contest. TJS reasoned that he is afraid that BOTH TCB and TKL may be disqualified and his application will force the PAP not to do that. He said if all of them got the certificates, he will negotiate with both TCB and TKL to come up with a consensus on who is the best candidate to stand for PE.

But when TJS gets his certificate and I called him from HK, he said that he is definitely going to stand for PE because he is the “most independent”. I told him, he is NOT independent because he will always be viewed as opposition member. Anyway, since he insists on contesting and not going along what was initially thought of negotiation, there is nothing much I can do.

These are true facts. Nothing more nothing less.

    Goh Meng Seng

  17. Hea says:

I heard that lots of opposition don’t like tjs too. There’s no smoke without fire..although wp is against ep but usually they should support an opposition member right? But why don’t they even want to speak up or endorse tjs?

Unlike others, I don’t spin stories but these are the truths behind the scenes. TJS can dispute it face to face with me if what I have said are false, no problem with that.

I am also disturbed that at the second part of the campaign, it seems that TJS campaign has turned into almost copying wholesale all the ideas that TKL has put up.

TJS was non-committal on the Presidential salary during the Round Table discussion while TKL has stated right from the start that he is going to donate at least half of his Presidential salary to charity, particularly to help the poor students and aged. Then just a day later, TJS talked about the $500K salary and even joked about the $1 salary. It really looks like the 7 Month dinner auction but just that the bidding is to see who has lower bid on the salary!

TKL has put up the plan of coming up with an Annual Presidential Report on the reserve management right from the beginning of the campaign. TJS also follows up with that too in the later part of the campaign.

TKL has used the slogan Voice of the People but look, TJS campaign started to add that Voice of the People right at the back of his initial slogan! Even slogan they want to grab!

Thus, with all objectivity, I really think that it is TJS campaign which is going all out to micmick TKL and trying to undermine TKL’s campaign. I am really truly puzzled by it.

  18. Freedomman says:

Thank you Goh Meng Seng for speaking up!
Tho u were from NSP, you were oso from WP.
N u know our way of operation.
    Vry good Goh Meng Seng!
But still that dsn’t warrant you disguising as Aurvandil to smear others.

  19. jani lubis says:

The writer and some commentators are sent by PAP here to kacau-kacau. Low Thia Khiang confirmed that all these are rubbish, in other words no such things exist…!

  20. Freedomman says:

jani lubis, show me evidence that Low thia khiang rubbished these.
    He never!
and what do you mean sent by PAP here to kacau-kacau?
i am a WP supporter! i don’t like the PAP so I vote WP in aljunied and they win!
i tell you la, even if WP vs your SDP, WP will win 80% of votes compared to you sore losers.
